Pinamuntugan Island, Hidden Gem of Albay

The beach of Pinamuntugan Island.

My fondness of the Philippines' rice terraces didn't stop me from diverting my vacation south of Manila. Instead of going to my favorite place, Ifugao, my friends and I went to Bicol Region to try something different. The Mayon Volcano, with its perfect conical shape, is emitting pyroclastic clouds. Tourists and local media flooded the province to witness the soon-to-be eruption of the active volcano.

Part of our trip is to visit Pinamuntugan Island. It is an hour and a half boat ride from Bacacay Port. You may reach the port within an hour from Legazpi City Terminal via Public Van or Jeepney.

It was a bumpy ride all throughout our journey. The breeze was strong as we can feel the heat of the sun. We will be having a picnic once we reached the island. We had shrimps and crabs for lunch. It is a private island and soon to be opened. We were invited by WOWtrippers for a day of relaxing.

Since the island is hidden and is still undeveloped, you don't expect to see huts and cottages along the vicinity. The sand beneath our feet was so fine. It is white under the heating rays of the sun. The pristine seawater is so clear and the horizon is blue-green. Perfect for beach-bumming.

We were still playing in the water when the waves were getting stronger. The beach is facing the Pacific Ocean. So, by the time we head back to Bacacay Port, the breeze was a lot stronger and a big black cloud was ready for a downpour anytime.

Our daytrip at Pinamuntugan Island was an adventure. We snorkel through the waves, had picnic in silence in a remote beach, passed by a few strong waves, laugh and had fun on the white sand. It was all worth the long trip. Indeed, the island is a hidden gem of Albay.
